Important Information on Zithromax

Zithromax is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a number of bacterial infections and other medical conditions as determined by a doctor.

Drug Uses

Zithromax is used to treat mild to moderate skin infections, respiratory infections, pharyngitis (strep throat), tonsillitis, obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, sexually transmitted diseases of the cervix or urinary tract, and genital ulcers in men. Zithromax is prescribed for children suffering from pneumonia, tonsillitis, strep throat and middle ear infections.

Dosage

Zithromax is to be taken exactly as prescribed by a doctor. Never increase or decrease the dosage without consulting your doctor. Zithromax comes in the form of capsules to be taken orally, as well as an adult oral suspension and a pediatric oral suspension. Zithromax does not have to be taken with food.

Do not discontinue treatment with Zithromax without consulting your doctor. Early cessation of this medication can result in the bacteria surviving and becoming immune to Zithromax and other drugs.

Zithromax should be taken at least one hour before, or two hours after, a meal. If you are using the oral suspension, mix the entire contents of the dose in two ounces of water and drink immediately. If there is any residue of the medication in the glass, add some more water and drink again. Repeat this procedure until there is no trace of the medication in the glass.

If using the pediatric suspension for your child, shake the bottle thoroughly and measure each dose with the supplied calibrated dropper. Do not store the pediatric suspension for more than 10 days.

Precautions

While taking Zithromax, avoid the use of antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium.

Do not use Zithromax if you have had an allergic reaction to any ingredient used in this drug. Inform your doctor of any other medications you are using because Zithromax has been known to have an adverse reaction with certain medications.

Before taking Zithromax, tell your doctor if you have had any liver or kidney disease, heart rhythm disorder or a history of Long QT syndrome (a disorder of the heart’s electrical activity). If you have suffered any of these conditions, Zithromax may not be suitable for you, or your doctor may prescribe a reduced dosage.

Pregnant women, or women planning to become pregnant, or women who are breast-feeding should use Zithromax with caution. It is not yet known if Zithromax is passed into breast milk. There is no evidence that Zithromax can harm an unborn fetus. Discuss the risks of using Zithromax with a doctor.

Missed Dose

If a dose is missed, it can be taken as soon as you remember, as long as it does not clash with the next scheduled dose. In this case, rather skip the missed dose. Never take a double dose.

Side-effects

Call for emergency assistance if you show any signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. These symptoms are very serious.

Zithromax may also cause the following serious side-effects: bloody, watery or clay colored diarrhea, chest pain, irregular heart beat, nausea, low fever, stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, headache with severe blistering or peeling, and red skin rash. If any of these symptoms occur, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Less serious side-effects include mild nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, stomach pain, fatigue, dizziness, a feeling of nervousness, insomnia, vaginal itching or discharge, mild skin rash or itching, hearing problems, decreased sense of smell or taste.

Zithromax may cause other side-effects not listed above. If any other uncomfortable symptoms occur while using Zithromax contact your doctor.

Storage

Zithromax should be stored in an air-tight container in a cool, dry place away from sunlight or moisture.

Zithromax Overdosage

There is no specific information available about overdose with Zithromax. However, as with all medications, excessive doses of Zithromax will cause serious medical conditions. If overdose is suspected, call for emergency assistance immediately.
